The “soul” of product management

Writer: Shahar BahatShahar Bahat

A lesson from the Disney movie "Soul" about product management

I recently watched the movie "Soul" from Disney, and I was blown away by how the creators of the movie tackled hard subjects like sadness, death, and depression in such a beautiful and accessible way for kids. This got me thinking about the importance of good product management, and how it involves the ability to transfer difficult information in a clear and accurate way to users.

In "Soul," the protagonist Joe Gardner is a jazz musician who dreams of becoming a successful music teacher. When he unexpectedly dies, he ends up in "The Great Before," where he meets other souls who are waiting to be born. As Joe navigates through this unfamiliar world, he discovers that his true purpose in life is not just to become a successful musician, but to inspire others to pursue their passions and find their own purpose.

What struck me about "Soul" was how the creators managed to tackle complex and often difficult themes in a way that is accessible to kids. They did this by using relatable characters and stunning visuals that not only captivate the audience but also make it easier for them to understand and process difficult information.

This is where good product management comes in. A good product manager must be able to understand their users' needs and translate those needs into a product that not only meets those needs but also makes it easy for users to understand and use the product. They must be able to communicate complex information in a clear and accurate way to their team and stakeholders.

Despite being an underrated film, "Soul" offers so much to learn, and it is truly one of the best movies out there. Inspire our teams to create products that are not only functional, but also engaging and fun by taking a page from Joe's book.

Thanks for reading, and remember: good products make for happy users and happy users make happy product managers!
